Raiders 2022 Outlook: Good or Bad?

As many of you may know, football is back. This past Thursday the Las Vegas Raiders took on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 Hall of Fame game. Raiders came out on top 27-11 in a second and third team contest. These games give a chance to fringe players to show that they can compete at the highest level and really could mean the difference between having a job or not when the season starts. Even though most starters did not play, it still got me excited for the season and to look at where I expect the Raiders to land come the end of the season.

With key additions of Davante Adams and Chandler Jones in the offseason the Raiders showed that they are ready to go all in next season. The offense is going to be high powered with Derek Carr, Josh Jacobs, Davante Adams, Darren Waller, Hunter Renfrow, and Mack Hollins as the feature position players on this offense. The weakest part of the offense right now is the offensive line which features young talents across the entire front. They were the weakest part of the team last season and have had the most eyes on them during training camp.

Defensively, the Raiders secondary is where the most questions come up. Rock Ya-Sin and Anthony Averett were recent additions at the cornerback position. I expect them to make an immediate impact but question their ability to be lock-down starters with Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, and Russell Wilson throwing against them. At the safety position, the team is consistently worried about Jonathan Abram’s cover ability – as anybody would be. It’s going to be paramount for him to develop his coverage skills throughout the off-season if he wants to keep his job after this season. On the defensive front, Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones are looking to cause havoc for opposing quarterbacks which is the best chance that we have at competing for the division.

The AFC West is unquestionably the best division in football right now with every single team being a potential playoff contender. The Raiders have fully acknowledged this and made every move necessary for the team to win. I predict that the Raiders go 10-7 this season in a very tough division. I have them splitting games with the Chiefs and Chargers and have them beating the Broncos two times this season. With a 10-7 record I think we will finish 2nd in the league behind the Chargers with the Chiefs then Broncos following us. Chiefs lost a lot of key pieces in the offseason and are going to start to see their empire crumble starting this year. Overall, I think this would put the Raiders in for a Wild Card playoff spot where I fully expect them to make a run for the championship. Don’t discount the Raiders coming into this 2022 season.
